Bugonia

Bugonia was my favorite film of 2025. It was between this and One Battle After Another, which I find myself quoting more while Bugonia is what I find myself thinking about more.

The acting is first and foremost what makes this movie special. Jesse Plemons played his part as a conspiracy nutjob perfectly, as he tends to do with any role. And he's got a newcomer partner that worked with him extremely well, a uniquely suited individual for the job (and not to mention the greaseball Stavvy).

And then Jesse's acting is at least equally matched with Emma Stone who plays the role of the driven CEO stuck in the nutjob's crosshairs extremely well.

We need to send the message that we have a new culture here now. Where people should, of course, feel free to leave at 5:30 and be with their families. No one is going to be overworked like in the past. No more unpleasant incidents. But, of course, it's not compulsory. And obviously, if people still have work to do, they should absolutely stay and continue to work. But it's not strictly enforced. Although we still do want to meet quotas. So if we can do that, just remembering, you know, we are running a business here, so "let your conscience guide you" kind of thing.

That exchange is one of the funniest amongst a host of other incredibly awkward conversations between individuals that are simply talking past each other.

The last act of the movie hits the strange and unusual heights that I simply adore. It's not a movie that'll be everyone's cup of tea, but if you want a weird tale of modern conspiracy, great acting, and an unforgettable overall arc then I strongly recommend this movie.

I won't say anymore because I think it's a film that's generally best to go in blind. So if you're ready for dark humor in an intense setting suited for conspiracy theorists, this is a great one.
