This movie has flaws. But warts and all, it was a good watch. And I'm not talking from overly-nostalgic-tinted goggles. My first viewing of this was in 2026 where I watched this, Clueless, and then Legally Blonde 2 over the course of two weekends.
Legally Blonde didn't age perfectly, but it was still a hoot. Dialogue was snappy and sharply tailored and the actors played their parts very well. Reese was excellent and Jennifer knows how to perfectly deliver a line.
There were all the staples of late 90s, early 2000s movies -- the opening music montage, the bizarre yet somehow still workable middle-of-the-movie "bend and snap" montage. And then of course the explanations of what happened to all the characters after the events (because franchises weren't quite the given thing yet).
The movie may not be a masterpiece, but it gets pretty perfect marks for being a fun comedy with a good overarching message -- everybody brings their own brilliance to the table. It's that kind of classic American optimism that I'm nostalgic for and made this a nice lil' Sunday-Funday viewing.
Note: Ironically enough, watching the first episode of Amazon's Elle afterward, it takes this chic, neatly bundled story and stretches it painfully thin to the point of seemingly missing what made this work so well.
