Devil May Cry - The Animated Series

★★★★☆

You need to be a bit of a cornball. And a badass. If you're that combination of person, you may enjoy the animated series whether you played the games or not.

Devil May Cry is all about flaunting style, power, and violence while wrapped up in a trenchcoat with a devil-may-care attitude.

The games claim to fame was the kinetic energy of the action, the stylishness of the combos, and the badass art direction that matched all those energies. There were also more than a few pieces of an intriguing story with tragedy, dueling siblings, and end-of-the-world arcs. And again, if you like badass tropes that are employed generously then the games are excellent and the series carries over a lot of that energy.

That all said, the show is different. To start, it's not a game so your enjoyment will be directly impacted by consuming a passive TV show vs. the frenetic lean-forward inputs of a game. So if you adore the game and you're one of those folks who struggle with how entertainment imperfectly ports between mediums, then it may be a challenge to have something you know and love change to this degree (and yes, I'm looking at you "the book was better" dumbasses who tend to lack nuance).

The series is animated and the team did a great job there and beyond -- the hyper-violence is beautifully displayed and the battle scenes are wonderful. But a lot of that wonder comes from the soundtrack that pulls in 2000s extreme over the top badassery bait with new (and old) songs from groups like Evanescence, PAPA ROACH, and others. Power Glove does a great job with all the tunes they touch as usual.

I played... 2 of the games? Probably two decades ago. I've evolved into a Bayonetta and Platinum fanboy so my knowledge of all the lore is limited. But it taps into it all nicely. And I like Lady. So I recommend this.

This is a 3-part series and I just finished the second part, which carried the herky-jerky momentum of the first to much greater heights with much more interesting scenes fed by more developed characters and a much more interesting arc.
