Halo: Campaign Evolved
Halo Studios
Halo took the Goldeneye crown and ran with it. Let's see where it's ended up.
Back to the beginning with this one. Like so much this last decade, we are remaking what are now classics because everything is much more expensive and public perception is even more fickle, fragmented, and frenetic.
Consumption and roots of outrage aside, let's talk Halo. This was an unbelievable entry into the mainstream zeitgeist for Microsoft and the development team. Genius work, with it starting as a third person tactical before becoming one of the most defining first-person-shooters up until CoD took the crown.
I replayed this campaign countless times to git gud at the multiplayer. Now, it's back and it's in Unreal engine -- which is perhaps the most interesting point of all of this for me. Unreal Engine is dominating all video generation, games and otherwise. It's a wild consolidation and I'm intrigued how this game is going to fit into that mold.
The original Halo had countless brilliant pieces to it -- from intriguing story to buttery gameplay to genius enemy "ai" programming. I am most intrigued here to see how the attention to detail from the handcrafted original Halo engine transfers over. Not holding my breath for that, as I'm sure it'll be a visual spectacle and it's foolish to hold out hope for any attempts to recreate magic and catch lightning in a bottle (also see: Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade).
