Jackass: Best and Last
Jeff Tremaine
A nostalgic not-quite-cash-grab that's always funny.
Jackass descends from the long line of almost pure physical comedy.
I've been an enjoyer of their brand of comedy for a long, long time. It started with skateboard videos and CKY. Low production value, shock and brazen balls for laughs. It’s as simple as that.
There's some base intellectual element to it all though. This one tried keying into the nostalgia and did fine enough to give Johnny Knoxville and the gang a pass for their light-on-new-material comedy act. But it did it well with more rapid-fire skits drawing deep from the well alongside some new material (Poopie's lip filler being the highlight). And then there's always Paul Walter Hauser's appearance to give it real cinema credentials.
But for comedic performance art it still brought the entire theater to laughter throughout the idealistic 1.5 hour runtime (although less than 33% full Sunday matinee release weekend, but a Friday late night crowd would likely be the real ticket here; laughter is contagious and physical comedy transcends all language, dialogues, and cultures so this is a particularly good theater experience like Obsession).
If you've enjoyed their earlier stuff, this is more good work. If you haven't partaken, perhaps you start from the original earlier TV series or early movies. Regardless I do recommend it if you're so inclined.
