I almost bounced off Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed after the first episode, waiting a few weeks before giving the second one a go and immediately saying "ah, I get it! we don't know where we'll end up in this spiral." And perhaps the post-Widow's Bay euphoria contributed with this also-Apple distributed show.
I am a big fan of Tatiana Maslany since Orphan Black, a sci-fi drama comedy. And in here, she is what makes thiss how work alongside the non-cookie cutter plot. The show quickly answers questions before opening up other ones and her frenetic yet cool energy bounces between all the states of mind with ease.
The rest of the cast are generally fine, although the police officers I'm not sold on (but potentially that's good acting too causing that). And the comic relief sidekicks are fine-ish if a bit one note. Even the kid actor deserves kudos despite being only minimally shown. The show is well shot and paced with each story arc not leaving you frustrated and wanting more.
I do not want to say too much beyond this, potentially tipping you off to the twists and turns of the mystery. This show is very bingeable and the threads being pulled can create a great tapestry, even if it only ends being this season (c.f. Apple’s other The Afterparty with the self-contained murder mystery seasons which I thoroughly enjoyed, but that one was a funnier more meta-genre endeavor and quite different to this).
