Downton DC has plenty to take in -- food, sights, museums, monuments, people watching.
Driving into and around DC is something you can do. And you may need to if you’re visiting for a long stretch of time as there’s adjacent splendor less than an hour away (e.g. Baltimore, Annapolis, etc.).
But there’s a grand train station that puts you right into the heart of the city to sightsee, eat delicious foods, find your favorite venues, and more.
Like Baltimore, Washington DC has an overblown negative connotation in my experience and their museum game is absolutely top-notch with the free admittance Smithsonian’s, particularly Natural History Museum, at the forefront.

If you’re in an Air and Space mood then it’s well-worth the extra trek down to the National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA where they still have the space shuttle Discovery (as they should) in multiple, cavernous, brilliantly curated hangar displays giving these huge exhibits the room they need to breath.
